About Terry O'Hagan

Hailing from Liverpool in the UK, as a kid the city was my playground. it’s an environment I am comfortable in, its characters fascinate me, each with their own individual story and purpose.
Serving for 43 years in the British and Australian Army, I’ve spent a lot of time in various urban environments, where the observation of people was an integral part of my role. Now armed with a camera I’m ‘at home’ on the streets; being lost “In the moment’, observing and capturing actions, items, intricacies, colours, smells, shadows, reflections, merges, patterns, architecture and more. it’s inexplicably satisfying and positively therapeutic.
The photography..
As well as the physical health benefits of meandering with my camera for miles, I embrace the positive mindfulness aspects that street photography provides. I’m inspired by many of the great masters such as Cartier-Bresson, Winogrand, Maier and Fan Ho. My more recent work appears to be heavily influenced by the imagery of Ho, who explored the streets of Hong Kong, capturing everyday people and life. I’m continuously hunting out the contrast of dark shadows and harsh light, candidly capturing the movement and behaviour of people as they maneuver throughout the city.
The future..
An additional passion of mine is to shoot live music events. The challenge of capturing an artist in light that I have no control over, whilst portraying the passion and mood, is a continuous goal. This, in addition to conducting one to one street photography workshops, is something I will continue to do until I’m no longer able to press a shutter button!
